Les “Skip” Gooch grew up in the Northeast Glacial Lakes region of South Dakota. His family settled in the area as farmers. His grandfather and father started a farm implement/auto sales business which was eventually relocated to Milbank. Skip’s mother was the office manager with a construction company/architect which is where he got his first exposure to the construction industry. As a child, he went through reams of paper, drawing up floor plans which he would create with his building blocks and Lincoln Logs. Upon graduation from High School, he enrolled in the Architectural Drafting and Estimating program at NDSSS in Wahpeton, ND. After graduating in Wahpeton, he transferred to the NDSU Architecture Department in Fargo. After college, he headed back to his roots and began his internship in Watertown, SD. A bigger city beckoned his attention and he brought his family to Sioux Falls where he continued his internship with Koch Hazard Architects and Architecture Incorporated. In the early 90’s, it was time to spread out more, and at the persistence of his wife, they returned to her roots in Fargo, ND, where he joined Yeater, Hennings, Ruff, Schulz, Rokke, Welch as Project Architect. The construction industry was fast changing during these years and his roll evolved into Specifications and into Construction Management. It was during their time in Fargo, that having a Northern Minnesota lake home became a goal. The towering pines and the call of the loons helped them focus their attention to the Park Rapids/Walker area and they finally bought the first place they looked at on Lake Belle Taine. Keeping family first was easy at the lake but very difficult in the fast paced Fargo/Moorhead city lifestyle. After much consideration, the decision to move to the lake came, where the kids could be in a smaller school district and family time could be nurtured in the front yard, on the beach. Since this move, the reality of fitting a family of six permanently in the cabin was far too crowded. Eventually finding a 5 acre wooded piece of heaven still available on Belle Taine, the family was back in the construction mode. The development of the plan and construction of their dream home was finally going to become a reality. After a brief period of serving as his church's Youth Director, Skip took the classes and embarked on a very successful career in real estate. The construction industry was deep in his blood, and the opportunity to get back in, developed through a very professional Design/Build construction company coming into Nevis. The same goals of Heartland Contractors, in terms of integrity, professionalism and dedication to quality construction were very appealing to him. His past experience and the professional team that Heartland Contractors had already assembled have been blended into a perfect match. Reputation and the development of great relationships is the key to the success of both. Les is pleased to serve as Sales Manager of this fine organization and looks forward to serving both the past and new clients in all of their construction needs. |
